Episode 2 - Remunicipalisation: The future of water services? by WaA podcast published on 2019-05-31T07:44:35Z What is remunicipalisation? What can we learn from the successes and failures of cities and citizens that have tried to regain control of their water services? We discuss it with one of the editor of Water Alternatives special issue, David McDonald (Queen's University, Kingston, Canada) and with an activist, Miriam Planas (Aiguas es Vida, Barcelona). Read the full special issue here: http://www.water-alternatives.org/index.php/current-issue Genre Science Comment by Carla Water war in Barcelona? In a recent survey the result was that water is not a problem for the Barcelona citizens (only 2% of them asked for a better service). The activists use to talk about a battle, war, and they try to convince the citizens that they have a problem with the water supply. Citizens know well where their problems are. The speaker in this podcast is not giving any kind of reason to justify the "remunicipalization", it is only an ideologic position. She talked about changing the ownership. What does it mean? Forgets that the water service in Spain is always a public service, and the owner is always the public authority. In particular in Barcelona the competence of the water service belongs to the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (Catalan Parliament Act 31/2010, August 3). This is a Public Administration which includes 36 municipalities (http://www.amb.cat/s/es/web/area-metropolitana/municipis-metropolitans.html), Barcelona is one of them. 2019-06-06T19:45:59Z
