The Water Dissensus – A Water Alternatives Forum

"How could anything non-controversial be of intellectual interest to grown-ups?" (Edward Abbey). This Forum is intended to provide space for critical debates and discussions about water issues. Existing dissensus, or antagonistic values and points of view, can be turned into a learning opportunity for the benefit of all and give way to reasoned debates that have the potential both to further understanding of complex water issues and to generate new ideas.

Mukhtarov is Assistant Professor of Governance and Public Policy at the International Institute of Social Sciences (ISS), Erasmus University Rotterdam. dr. Mukhtarov’s professional career developed at universities in England, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan and Singapore. His research can be summarised in three broad themes: water governance, politics of knowledge, and theories of policy-making.

Geographically, Farhad’s work has covered Western Europe, the larger Mediterranean, and Central and South-Eastern Asia. He currently develops research on water diplomacy and governance in the South Caucasus. He was a lead author of the UN-Environment's flagship publication – the Sixth Global Environmental Outlook published in 2018. In the period 2021-2024, he served as Associate Editor of Environmental Science & Policy, a leading international journal on science-policy interface in sustainability.
